Natural Gas, an Environmental Friendly Fuel - Get Ready in Time!

Bosnia and Herzegovina will be asked to fulfill some preconditions to be integrated in the international community, such as to join and accept the Protocol on Cross border Air Pollution and to be involved into preparing the international programs aimed at increasing energy efficiency.

Strong environmental laws are in force in the developed countries. They limit the emission of harmful gases and stipulate payment of high fine for emission of pollutants. That means that the utilization of environmental friendly fuels offers every consumer a possibility to save money by reducing energy costs.

Natural gas is the most environmental friendly fuel of any other fuels.

CO2 Emission by fuel

Emission of CO2, SO2 and NOX by burning fossil fuels:

CO2     - By burning natural gas, approximately one half of CO2 content obtainable by burning coal is emitted. CO2 intensifies green house effect and contributes to global warming.

SO2     - mainly burning coal and liquid fuels emits it. Natural gas produces no SO2. SO2 causes acidization of the environment.

NOX     - By burning natural gas, smaller amounts of nitrogen oxides are emitted than by burning other fossil fuels. NOX causes acidization of the environment (together with SO2 and ammonia).

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country with very low energy efficiency. To enhance energy efficiency means to use the technologies consuming smaller amounts of energy and offering, at the same time, the same or better energy services. The need to optimize energy efficiency is a strong argument, which investment into the shift from the existing fuels, such as coal and liquid fuels, to natural gas makes financially viable. The costs to be paid in the future for the emission of pollutants are the second argument.

We should be market-oriented: we should invest into the technologies saving the energy and protecting the environment.

Stimulating Measures

According to the model already in place in the developed countries, the prices of fuels by consumer sector are governed by the tariff policy. The tariff policy is aimed at developing steady and progressive market, at one hand, and creating the conditions for the companies to do business in an economically efficient way, on the other hand.

BH-Gas is standing for establishing such tariffs for the natural gas consumers in B&H, which will lead to increase in natural gas consumption and increase of natural gas share in the energy balance of the country.

The tariff regulations should stimulate higher natural gas consumption in a way that larger consumers would pay lower price for natural gas. In addition, the consumers using natural gas continuously over a year and having a considerable share in the summer consumption would also be stimulated.

Striving of Bosnia and Herzegovina to join the European Union requires the integration in the system of the European energy market. By preparing for such integration, we have to harmonize and adjust the regulations in compliance with the recommendations made by the EU for this field.
